CASEY REAS

Für Casey Reas (*1972) ist Software kein Werkzeug, sondern der Akt des Programmierens selbst ist das Zentrum des Kunstwerks. In seiner Kunst ersetzen generative Software-Systeme die Ausführung per Hand, die das Konzept des Künstlers umsetzen. Seine Software-Arbeiten setzt Reas in verschiedenen Medien wie Projektionen, Bildern oder Skulpturen um. Jedes Material streicht einen anderen Aspekt der Software heraus.

Als Herausgeber der Software Processing wurde Reas zusammen mit Ben Fry in 2005 mit dem Golden Nica der Ars Electronica ausgezeichnet. Processing ist eine Open-Source Programmsprache, die speziell für Künstler und Designer entwickelt wurde und mittlerweile von der Community in unzählige Richtungen weiterentwickelt wurde.

Reas Softwarekunst, Prints und Installationen wurden in zahlreichen Solo- und Gruppenausstellungen in Museen und Galerien in den USA, Europa und Asien gezeigt, u.a. im Victoria & Albert Museum, ICA (London), New Museum for Contemporary Art (New York), NTT ICC (Tokyo), Künstlerhaus Wien, LAboral Gijon, ZKM (Karlsruhe), Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai, Telic (Los Angeles), BANK (Los Angeles), Eyebeam (New York), CCCB (Barcelona), STUK (Leuven), National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design (Oslo).

Reas lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles, wo er eine Professur für Bildende Kunst an der University of California besetzt.
